About trip

Distance: 1.5-4.5 Miles Time: 1-2.25 Hours Terrain: Easy Description: Chopwell Wood is a fine, mixed forestry wood on the northern slopes above the River Derwent. The existence of the wood is recorded as early as the 12th century, when it was a part of the estates belonging to the Bishops of Durham. It is now in the ownership of the Forestry Commission but is a somewhat more interesting place than many other commercial woods, having a large number of broad-leaved trees interspersed amongst the conifers. This allows more air and light into the forest and encourages the undergrowth.
